BELLBROOK FIRE/EMS

Firefighters ask citizens to practice fire safety this week

Bellbrook firefighters are asking local residents and business owners to help them celebrate Fire Prevention Week by conducting a fire drill in their home or office.

This year's theme for Fire Prevention Week, "The Great Escape," encourages everyone to be familiar with how they would escape from fire while at home or on the job. The department's fire safety campaign started last week with a mailing to every address in the city containing information on the department and it's Fire Prevention Week activities.

In addition, firefighters spent last week reviewing fire and life safety skills with more than 1000 children in the Sugarcreek Local Schools.

Firefighters will take their message to the community once again on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999 at their annual Fire Department Community Open House. Held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Fire Station 2 on the corner of N. Linda Drive and West Franklin Street, the Open House features local safety groups, including a search and rescue dog organization, as well as the department's own resources.

Among the displays scheduled is a rope rescue demonstration, emergency medical scenarios and auto extrication using the "Jaws of Life."

Chief Scott Hall says that, although this week is geared toward fire safety, being prepared is a continuous effort.

"Our inspection and fire safety programs work year round, but this is our chance to really touch base with every resident in the city," he said. "Between our school programs and Tuesday's open house, we'll get to spread our message to close to 2500 residents, almost a quarter of our population."
